For the second consecutive year, musicians from the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande will beperforming at Institut Florimont as part of our cultural season, “Encré” dans la culture. Last year, under the impetus of pianist and composer Marc Perrenoud, the group paid a stirring homage to jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea, to inaugurate the Institut’s new auditorium.
As part of this year’s season, a concert on 13 February features members of the OSR, performing quintets for piano and winds by two titans of the Classical era, Mozart and Beethoven. Simon Sommerhalder (oboe), Dmitry Rasul-Kareyev (clarinet), Alfonso Venturieri (bassoon), Jean-Pierre Berry (horn) and Ivani Venturieri (piano) will play the Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat Major KV 452 by Mozart (1784) and the Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat Major Op. 16 by Beethoven (1796).
Written twelve years apart, these pieces are representative of the Classical period, and are often compared due to their similarities, such as unconventional instrumentation, identical keys and three-movement structure and highlighting the specific tone of each instrument. Yet both works have their own personality, with Beethoven challenging Mozart’s classical style.
